I found some notes on a sermon I heard in 2016. They seem to give at least a good starting point for understanding what Jesus meant by the Kingdom of Heaven belonging to “such as these”. So here are my pearls of wisdom, courtesy of whoever the preacher was:
These children are a model for us – that’s what Jesus said. Be child-like in my approach to Him. This is in tension with constantly being urged to “grow up”.
A child-like faith doesn’t over-analyse, believes the Word, doesn’t try to think about the whole world all the time. It’s loyal, trusting, obedient. Thoughtful and reflective without wandering away from God. Hopeful, exciting. It has a life, a lightness, a certainty that we often lack. It’s a here-and-now, “let’s do it now because God says so” faith!
And here’s the relevant scripture:
Jesus Blesses the Children
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.
But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left.
