From time to time I blog about a fictional musician (I know, it’s a weird thing to do, but that’s the kind of mind I have). In his “Postcard from Barcelona” post, my fictional character refers to a fictional song called The Staircase. I subsequently wrote these lyrics with the idea of maybe creating a real song from the fiction.

Now, you may not like these lyrics but, believe me, I’m even worse at writing melodies.

Sooooooo….if anyone out there fancies putting them to music, be my guest. I’ll happily split rights, royalties and all the fame and fortune that will inevitably follow.

The Staircase

One step
And another step
And another step
On and on and up and up

Calling me upwards
Leading me onwards
Straining to see the top
Curving away into the distance
I have a feeling The Staircase is playing
A game with my heart
A game that’ll never stop

So it’s
One step
And another step
And another step
On and on and up and up
Step and step and climb and climb

Can’t back out
Nowhere to rest
Hopin’ for another way
Shafts of light glimmering faintly
The Staircase beckons me urges me on
My spirit rises
Energy strikes like lightning

Am I climbing a curving stairway to heaven
Or walking the 12-step road to recovery?
Am I heading on up to a golden gateway
Or tripping the not so light fantastic?

And
It’s
One step
And another step
And another step
On and on and up and up
Step and step and climb and climb
Step and step and climb and climb and all the way…

And here at the top I see…
The staircase has brought me home
